AB#357 IV Grey Eclypse

AB#357 IV Gray Eclipse is a diptych on raw canvas exploring the relationship between perception, attention, and the apparently accidental alignment of celestial bodies.

Across two imagined horizontal lines, planets and stars are represented by overlapping circles. The upper line is composed of red and black circles, while the lower line introduces blue and black circles. Set against a concrete-grey background, occasional yellow clouds crossed by vivid red shadows interrupt the restrained composition, creating moments of visual tension and chromatic instability.

The central idea of the work is the moment of overlap: an event that may appear instantaneous and accidental to the observer, yet is the result of movements and trajectories unfolding over decades, centuries, or even millennia. The coincidence is therefore both fleeting and profoundly prepared by time. What we perceive as a single moment contains an almost immeasurable temporal dimension.

Colour becomes another instrument of perception. Red can be immediately perceived as physical, intense, and present, while blue can suggest something more mental, distant, or internal. The two horizontal levels therefore operate almost like different perceptual registers: the upper line attracts attention first, while the lower line communicates more indirectly, emerging through sustained observation.

The work also reflects on visibility and attraction. Everything is present within the composition, yet some elements deliberately become less evident, almost invisible or visually unattractive. AB#357 IV Gray Eclipse invites the viewer to slow down and reconsider what deserves attention, suggesting that perception is never neutral: it selects, excludes, discovers, and sometimes overlooks what has been there all along.

The artwork is painted on recycled raw canvas made from coffee sacks, handcrafted by artisan Carlo Mottola of Aversa. This material choice reinforces the dialogue between matter and perception, grounding the ethereal landscape in a tangible, lived surface.
