ABC#218 Athena Nike is a large-scale, high-quality photographic print on canvas, produced with an extended black canvas border that allows the work to be subsequently stretched and mounted on a frame.
The work presents a sculptural detail of a reproduction of the ancient Greek sculpture of Athena Nike, transformed through the superimposition of an abstract painting created by me. The classical image is partially submerged within a field of black, where the dripping of colour becomes both a pictorial gesture and a reference to the sea.
The work originates from the observation of the hypotheses surrounding the original placement of the sculpture, imagined in connection with a ship and the maritime world. The black paint spreading across the canvas evokes the turbulence of storms at sea, while the fragmented sculptural body emerges from the darkness as an image that has survived its own history.
The loss of the body becomes central to the meaning of the work. What remains is no longer the complete physical object, but a fragment capable of carrying an entire history within itself. Time reduces the body, its function, and its original context, yet individual moments can re-emerge through art, detached from their original duration.
In this sense, Athena Nike becomes a reflection on the persistence of the image. Like a memory emerging from darkness, the sculpture continues to shine despite fragmentation and the passage of millennia. What survives is not simply the object, but something less tangible: a trace, a moment, an idea — a kind of soul preserved through art.
